Indigenous and Western sciences have both made important and distinctive contributions to our collective understanding of the more-than-human world. Now, more than ever, these types of collaborations and the ideas and practices they generate are needed to tackle ecological challenges and protect human and nonhuman life. SACI is a collaboration between the Sarayaku Indigenous People of the Ecuadorian Amazon; the MOTH Program; Cosmo Sheldrake, a multi-instrumentalist, music producer, and field recordist; the Fungi Foundation, an organization dedicated to the protection of fungi; SPUN, a scientific organization uncovering and sharing the importance of the underground fungal world; and Local Contexts, an organization which creates pathways to make explicit and protect Indigenous data sovereignty.

In this project, Jane has worked with MOTH to develop unique protections for the Sarayaku peoples and the Kawsak Sacha (Living Forest). This included a ground breaking agreement that was signed by all parties in Sarayaku territory that recognized the rights of the forest alongside the ICIP held by the Sarayaku peoples. This Agreement is the first of its kind that includes the rights of the forest, as is already enshrined in the Ecuadorian Constitution. Jane continues to extend this work with Sarayaku, MOTH, SPUN and the Fungi Foundation to support Sarayaku rights in other contexts, including securing biodiversity monitoring data and developing frameworks for a Sarayaku Data Trust that establishes control, governance and decision making with Sarayaku for Sarayaku benefit.
