In 2025, Jane became the Director of the new Indigenous Data Law Lab at NYU. This ID Law Lab focused on addressing legal relationships to support the recognition of Indigenous Data Sovereignty.
Since 2018, Jane has been working in collaboration with Stephanie Carroll and Maui Hudson on a range of initiatives to support the operationalization of the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance. In 2019, this led to the development of the Equity for Indigenous Research and Innovation Coordinating Hub (ENRICH). ENRICH focused specifically on the development of Indigenous led protocols, Indigenous-centered standard setting mechanisms and machine focused technology. Between 2020-2024, ENRICH hosted 6 ENRICH Global Chairs who worked over their residency year on critical IDSov and Indigenous data issues. The Global Chairs also each received a one month residency at NYU to network and complete research. The Global Chairs were: Professor Maggie Walter (Palawa), Assistant Professor Krystal Tsosie (Diné/Navajo Nation), Associate Professor Keolu Fox (Kānaka Maoli), Associate Professor Stephanie Carroll (Ahtna-Native Village of Kluti-Kaah and Sicilian-descent), Dr Rose Barrowcliff (Butchulla) and Professor Katharina Ruckstuhl (Ngāi Tahu, Rangitāne).
From ENRICH to IDLaw Lab
In 2025 Jane received funding from the Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledge and Science (UMASS) to transition ENRICH into the IDLaw & AI Lab. The IDLaw Lab will extend ENRICH work with a focus on:
Indigenous Data Sovereignty Agreements with Universities
Developing legal and technological frameworks for Indigenous data trusts
Continuing work in the Indigenous Data Tech Stack.
Three significant outcomes of this work include the IEEE Recommended Practice for the Provenance of Indigenous Peoples Data - which will be released on 14 November 2025. Jane was the Vice-Chair of the Working Group developing this standard alongside Chair Stephanie Carroll and Secretary Randy Akee. This is the first standard for Indigenous data that has ever been developed.
The second significant outcome will be the Guidelines for the Governance of Indigenous Data in Scientific Publishing. Jane is part of the project leadership team led by Lydia Jennings and supported by AGU and NISO. These Guidelines will be released in December 2025.
The third outcome will be the CARE Data Maturity Model led by Dr. Riley Taitingfong.
